The bourbon finish added some all-American heartland flavor and a warming glow to the chilly Ivy League autumn celebration. The image of soup cans over a wood fire gave the tailgate a certain gritty old Swamp Yankee vibe, even here on the banks of the River Charles. It was atmospheric liquid magic on a frosty New England football day. The simple belly-warming tailgate cocktails were finished with a generous splash (or two or three) of bourbon: Maker's Mark and Booker's were the choices on this particular day. Then they scooped out the cider with a ladle and poured it into styrofoam coffee cups. They put big aluminum cans over a hot wood fire and filled them with apple cider. Kenary and Doyle (who stepped away as Harpoon's chief executive earlier this year) naturally served tailgate-friendly cans of Harpoon UFO White and their flagship Harpoon IPA, the ground-breaking beer that helped make India pale ale a national phenomenon when it debuted in 1993.īut the real tailgate treasure on this day was their delicious bourbon-soaked soup-can cider.
